My kitchen is on the small side, but a blank 45″ wide wall was in dire need of an upgrade. So, I transformed it into a garden-themed chalk wall mural. It is now a functional accent wall that also houses all my cooking spices in color-coordinated jars!
Here is how I created this oversized chalk board on my kitchen wall. Below is the before photo of the wall. It’s 45″ wide so not an overwhelming project. And, it’s a nice transition space leading into my living room. But alas, it is bare, and boring.

After wiping down the wall with a damp rag, I began painting with Krylon Black Chalk Wall Paint. I rolled on two coats with a small roller designed for smooth walls. I used a one-inch wide angle brush to cut into corners and at the baseboard.

Here is the finished wall with two coats of paint.

After the paint dried, I installed the three spice racks I had picked up at a local thrift store. They were in good shape, so I only had to wipe them off. I like the brown tones against the black wall. They also hold 36 spice jars.

I used my Adobe Express program to create my own 2″ x 4″ labels. This was my first try at printing so you can see the lines.

Here are the finished labels – with no lines! I also purchased some new spice jars to get started on my collection. I purchased 24 French Glass jars from The Spice Lab . I feel it was a smart buy because they fit perfectly in my spice racks!

The next step was to learn about chalk makers, since I had never used them before. I purchased three pens at Michael’s and practiced on some random paper and wood. Finally, I invested in a set of 24 chalk pens from the Loddie Doddie collection. I like these pens because they have reversible tips for blunt or chisel. The colors were also rich, which helped me match my flowers with the spice jar labels.

Below is the start of my chalk wall. I strolled through Pinterest to get some ideas and just started drawing freehand. Start with simple stems and leaves and work your way up from there. Remember, there is no “wrong” way to decorate your kitchen chalk wall. You do you!
